  • Jesus was hated; He was reviled with many false accusations during His time on earth.
  • Examples (insults):
    • Matt 9:3 – “this fellow blasphemes”
    • Matt 12:24 – casts out demons by Beelzebul, ruler of the demons
    • Matt 27:63 – “deceiver”
    • Mark 2:7 – “He is blaspheming”
    • Mark 2:16 – “eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners”
    • Mark 2:24 – “doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath”
    • Mark 3:2 – “heal[ing] on the Sabbath”
    • Mark 3:21 – “has lost His senses” (“His own people” made this accusation)
    • Mark 3:22 – “possessed by Beelzebul”
    • Mark 3:22 – “casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons”
    • Mark 3:30 – “has an unclean spirit”
    • Luke 5:21 – “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies?”
    • Luke 11:15 – “casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons”
    • Luke 19:7 – “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner”
    • Luke 23:2 – “misleading our nation”
    • Luke 23:14 – “one who incites the people to rebellion”
    • John 5:18 – “breaking the Sabbath”
    • John 5:18 – “making Himself equal with God”
    • John 7:12 – “He leads the people astray”
    • John 7:15 – “never been educated”
    • John 7:20 – “You have a demon”
    • John 7:48 – “No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him”
    • John 7:52 – “no prophet arises out of Galilee”
    • John 8:41 – “born of fornication”
    • John 8:48-52 – was “a Samaritan” and had “a demon”
    • John 9:16 – “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.”
    • John 9:24 – “we know that this man is a sinner”
    • John 9:29 – “we do not know where He is from”
    • John 10:20 – “has a demon and is insane”
    • John 10:21 – “demon-possessed”
    • John 10:33-36 – “blaspheming” and “being a man, but making himself out to be God”
    • John 11:37 – “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?”
    • John 18:30 – “an evildoer”
  • If Jesus was hated, so also will those who imitate Him be hated.
    • “…If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!” – Matt 10:25
    • “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.” – John 15:18
  • Yet we should not be dismayed at this dynamic, for it inures to our everlasting benefit:
    • “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great…” – Matt 5:11-12
