“Rules for thee but not for me.” – This adage may sound like it’s from the Bible, but it’s not; it’s nonetheless helpful for understanding what hypocrisy is.
The word “hypocrisy” or “hypocrite” appears 4 times in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7) and 8 times in Mt 23. And shows up twice in Lk 12, which follows a critique of the Pharisees and lawyers that sounds similar to the more extended on in Mt 23.
Hypocrisy was an occupational hazard for Pharisees, as it is for everyone who comes to be known as a seeker of God.
Even Peter once got called out for hypocrisy by his fellow apostle Paul (Gal 2). And Peter didn’t hold it against him (2 Pet 3:14-16). (2 Peter was written after Galatians.)
