There can be no doubt that Messiah was to be a king. The very term “Messiah” meant “king.” See CHRIST – MESSIAH – ANOINTED – (King).
- KING
- God promised David through the prophet Nathan that his descendant would be king in his place – 2 Sam 7:12-15
- The OT prophets said Messiah would reign as king – Jer 23:5; Mic 2:13; Zech 14:9
- Jesus called Himself a king – John 18:33-40
- The NT church called Jesus a king – Acts 17:7
- KING OF ISRAEL – a term of obvious meaning in most contexts but also a title of Messiah
- KING OF THE JEWS – Mt 2:2; 27:11
- (the) King of the Jews – one of Messiah’s titles, but also a term of derision applied to Jesus when he was crucified
- See Types, Shadows, and Figures of Christ for specific kings (e.g. Melchizedek, Saul, David, Solomon, Hezekiah) who were types of Messiah.
