Back to BSN Glossary: Lord Jesus Christ
This is a starter list – not exhaustive.
- John 1:1-2, 14 – The Word
- 1 Corinthians 2:8 – The LORD of Glory – “They would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” This title echoes Psalm 24:7–10, where “the King of glory” is YHWH Himself. Thus, “Lord of glory” retrospectively identifies Jesus with YHWH’s glorious presence before His incarnation.
- 1 Cor 10:4 – the Rock – Exodus 17:6 – YHWH says, “I will stand before you on the rock at Horeb.” Paul identifies the wilderness “Rock” (YHWH’s presence providing water) as Christ Himself.
- Col 1:15 – the firstborn of all creation
- Genesis 16:13; 48:15-16 – The Redeeming Angel / God Who Sees – Genesis 16:13 – Hagar names the speaker “You are the God who sees me” and Genesis 48:15–16 – Jacob blesses his grandsons: “The God who has been my shepherd… the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys.” Here, God and the angel are interchangeable — the “redeeming angel” acts with divine authority.
- Genesis 18:1–33 – The LORD (YHWH) Appearing in Human Form – “The LORD appeared to Abraham” as one of three men; Abraham speaks to Him as to God, and Genesis 19:24
- Gen 48:15 – The Shepherd – See also Ps 23:1 and John 10:11
- Ex 3:2-6 – the angel of the LORD (YHWH) – also in Gen 22:11-18; Judges 13:17-22
- Josh 5:13-15 – the commander of the LORD’S Army
- 1 Samuel 3:1–10, 21 – The Word (Davar YHWH) in the Old Testament
- Prov 8:22-31 – Wisdom (Personified) – See also 1 Corinthians 1:24 where this “Wisdom” is associated with Christ, who is called “the wisdom of God.”
- Isaiah 44:6 – The First and the Last – Isaiah 44:6 “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last” combined with Revelation 1:17–18 “I am the First and the Last, and the living One; I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” The title is carried directly from YHWH to Jesus.
