BSN: Peter

  • The man we most commonly call Peter or Simon Peter was identified in many different ways:
    • Simon in Lk 5:4. Simon was his birth name.
    • Simeon in Act 15:14 e.
    • Simon the son of John in Jn 1:42 e. That is, his father’s name was John.
      • Simon, son of John in Jn 21:15, 16, 17 e.
    • Simon Barjona in Mt 16:17. (“Bar” meant “son of” and “Jona” meant “John” – see above)
    • Peter in Mt 16:18 and elsewhere. This is the nickname Jesus gave him (Mk 3:16; Jn 1:42). It means “rock.”
    • Simon Peter in Lk 5:8 and elsewhere.
    • Cephas in Jn 1:42, and also in 1 Cor 1:12; 3:22; 9:5; 15:5; Gal 1:18;2:9, 11, 14. e. This name is the Aramaic version of “Peter” (meaning rock).
  • Simon was the brother of Andrew (Mt 4:18; 10:2; Mk 1:16, 29; Jn 1:40)
  • Simon was a fisherman by trade.
    • Simon and his brother Andrew worked the fishing trade together (Mt 4:18; Mk 1:16).
    • Simon was also partners in fishing with James and John, sons of Zebedee (Lk 5:10). Zebedee himself was involved in the business (Mt 4:21), which included hired servants (Mk 1:19-20).
  • Peter was married (Lk 4:38; Cor 9:5)
  • Peter was often part of a small group serving Jesus (that is, a subset of the twelve)…
    • of two with John the son of Zebedee (Lk 22:8; Act 3:1; 4:13; 8:14).l
    • of three with James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Mk 14:33; Lk 8:51; 9:28)
    • of four with his brother Andrew and also James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Mk 1:29; 13:3)
