- Philemon is the primary individual to whom Paul’s letter to Philemon was addressed. Also among its addressees were Apphia, Archippus, and the church that met in Philemon’s house.
- Philemon is mentioned by name in no other NT books. Neither is Apphia, but Archippus is mentioned in Colossians as active in ministry (Col 4:17).
- Onesimus is not addressed in the letter, but he is mentioned in the letter (Phile 1:10) and is actually the subject of it; he was Philemon’s escaped slave whom Paul was sending back to Philemon with the letter. Onesimus is also mentioned in Paul’s letter to the Colossians (Col 4:9).
- Because Archippus and Onesimus are both members of Philemon’s household, and because both are mentioned in Paul’s letter to the Colossians as members there, it is assumed that Philemon lived in Colossae.
