BSN: OT Quotations in Combination

Sometimes the New Testament writers quote parts of the Old Testament in combination. Here are some examples:

  • Mark 1:2-3 quotes a combination (mash up) of Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3 but only cites the major prophet as the source. (Major and Minor Prophets)
  • Matthew does the same in Mt 27:9-10 when he quotes a combination of Zechariah 11:11-13 with Jeremiah 19:1-13 (or possibly Jer 18:2-12 or Jer 32:6-9) and – like Mark – only makes the attribution to the major prophet.
  • Jesus also combines quotes from Isaiah (Is 56:7) and Jeremiah (Jer 7:11) into one sentence (Mt 21:13; Mk 11:17; Lk 19:46), though he simply precedes the sentence with “It is written” instead of citing either of the prophets’ names. Since both were major prophets, it’s likely hearers knew the sources without Jesus having to name either. In this regard, that the apostles often began quotations of single verses either without citation at all or else only with “It is written” as opposed to naming the specific book of the Old Testament being quoted.
