BSN: SLAVERY

  • Slavery was invented by man, not God.
  • The Law of Moses did not institute slavery among the Israelites; they themselves had been slaves. What the Law of Moses did was regulate slavery.
  • Similarly, the New Testament did not outlaw slavery. Rather it taught to escape it when possible (1 Cor 7:21; Phile 1:8-21); and to comply with it when escape was not possible.
  • It was the Industrial Revolution (which allowed most slave work to be mechanized) combined with Christian compassion (such as that of William Wilburforce in Great Britain) that allowed slavery to be abolished around the world. America was the only nation to fight a war over its removal.
  • A human vice can be so strong that regulating its excesses is more effective social policy than outlawing it. This was the lesson that Prohibition (1920-1933) taught America.
