  • “Tartaros” is sometimes rendered as “Tartarus.”
  • This word does not appear in the NASB 1995, but a form of it is translated as “hell” in 2 Peter 2:4. To be precise, it appears as a verb in the Greek: “to throw down into Tartaros.”
  • A form of the word (noun in this case) appears twice in the Septuagint: Is 40:20; 41:32. However, the NASB, of course, translates the OT from the Hebrew and not from the Septuagint and I cannot figure out how to correlate the Greek with the Hebrew. Therefore, I don’t know what words in the NASB 1995’s translate of these two verse relate back to Tartarus.
  • Jude 1:6 may be alluding to Tartaros.
  • Because of these vagaries and my linguistic limitations, it is hard for me to say definitive things about this term. Something I can say definitively is that it is quite unfortunate that the King James Version translated this word as “hell” and that so many English versions since have followed suit. This has added to the confusion around the word “hell.”
