#TGTC – “Things of God becoming Things of Christ”
- This hashtag is to make phrases that speak to the handoff of duties and honors from Father to Son – that is, from God to Messiah. This transfer took place gradually between Jesus’ resurrection and His second coming.
- Regarding the things of God becoming the things of Christ – see the prophecy of Is 22:24. What this points to is the glories of God being transferred to Christ, which is part of the fulfillment of Messiah ultimately being revealed as God (Is 9:6).
- Where there has been an expression like “the _____ of God” in the Bible or “the _____ of the Lord” in the Old Testament, we begin to see in the New Testament expressions like “the _____ of Christ.” For example, in the OT, the Gospels, and in Acts, we are used to seeing expressions like “the fear of God” (and “the fear of the Lord”), but in the Epistles we begin to see the expression “the fear of Christ.” Similarly, we’re used to seeing “the law of God” (and the “the law of the Lord”), but in the Epistles we begin to see “the law of Christ.” There are over a dozen of these, including:
- “the blessing of Christ” – Rom 15:29 e
- “My commandments” / “commandments…of the Lord Jesus” – Jn 14:15, 21; 15:10 / 1 Th 4:2 e
- “the day of Christ Jesus” / “the day of Christ” – Phil 1:6, 10; 2:16 e
- “the fear of Christ” – Eph 5:21 e
- “the fullness of Christ” – Eph 4:13 e (“the fullness of God” Eph 3:19 e)
- “the gospel of Christ” – Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 9:12; 2 Cor 2:12; 9:13; 10:14; Gal 1:7; Phil 1:27; 1 Th 3:2 e (“the gospel of God” is also 8x e)
- “(the interests) of Christ” – Phil 2:21 e (see Mt 16:23; Mk 8:33, in which “God’s interests” is literally “the things of God”)
- “the judgment seat of Christ” – 2 Cor 5:10 e (“the judgment seat of God” Rom 14:10 e)
- “the kingdom of Christ and God” and “the kingdom of His beloved Son” – Eph 5:5; Col 1:13
- “the law of Christ” – 1 Cor 9:21; Gal 6:2 e
- “the love of Christ” – Rom 8:35; 2 Cor 5:14; Eph 3:19 e (“the love of God” 12x e)
- “the mind of Christ” – 1 Cor 2:16 e
- “the name of Christ” – 1 Pet 4:14 e
- “the peace of Christ” – Col 3:15 e (“the peace of God” Phil 4:7 e)
- “the presence of Christ” – 2 Cor 2:10 e
- “the Spirit of Christ” – Rom 8:9; 1 Pet 1:11 e
- “the truth of Christ” – 2 Cor 11:10 e
- “the word of Christ” – Rom 10:17; Col 3:16 e
- “the work(s) of Christ” – Mt 11:2; Phil 2:30 e (compare to verses such as Jn 6:28; 9:3; 10:37; Ps 66:5; 78:7)
- In the wake of His resurrection from the dead, Jesus begins taking on duties previously performed by God – indicating His restoration to that role. These include:
- Jn 20:21 – Whereas God had previously sent the prophets, including the Messiah, it would be Messiah doing the sending on a go-forward basis.
- Jn 20:22 – Whereas God had previously been the One granting the Holy Spirit to humans, it would be Messiah granting the Holy Spirit on a go-forward basis. See also Acts 2:33.
