- Their birth and naming is recorded in Gen 41:50-52
- Joseph named the firstborn “Manasseh,” “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.”
- Jospeh named the second Ephraim, “For,” he said, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
- Their mother was Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On.
- Jacob, contrary to their birth order, gave Ephraim preference over Manasseh (Gen 48:1-22)
