Messianic Geography

  • Messianic Geography – that is, places associated with Messiah in prophecy (OT) and fulfillment (NT). Prior to Jesus being identified as the Messiah, people struggled to understand how they fit together or even to be aware of all of the messianic prophecies that were relevant to geography (Jn 7:25-27; 40-43, 52).
    • Bethlehem – Mic 5:2 and Mt 2:4-6
    • Egypt – Hos 11:1 and Mt 2:14-15
    • Galilee – Is 9:1; Mt 2:22-23
    • Nazareth – Is 9:1 (Nazareth was in Zebulun’s territory); Mt 2:22-23; 4:12-16
    • Sea of Galilee – Is 9:1 (the “sea” is explicitly mentioned, plus Capernaum was situated on the coast of the Sea of Galilee); Mt 4:12-16 (this was the move from Nazareth to Capernaum)
    • Jerusalem – Dan 9:24-27; Zech 12:10
