Maps

  • It often helps to have maps nearby when reading the Bible. It takes multiple maps because the Bible was written over a period of 1,600 years (roughly the 15th century BC to the 1st century AD). The two easiest ways to find a map relevant to the part of the Bible you are reading is:
    • The back of your Bible. Most editions will have color maps in the back.
    • The internet. They’re not hard to find. Here are some ways to search: [map from the time of Moses] or [map of Israel in time of King David] or [map of Paul’s missionary journeys]. Such searches will return, of course, maps you can buy, but there will also be maps you can just view online or even print.
  • Below are some specific maps I found help for studying the Four Gospels.
Maps to Help with the Gospels

These maps are of the land of Israel in the time of Jesus. They will help you understand the geography of the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Israel – This map shows the entire nation of Israel and the territories that bordered it in the time of Jesus. He never traveled anywhere other than what you see on this map.

It was less than 200 miles from Israel’s northernmost point (Dan) to its southernmost point (Beersheba), and roughly 50 miles across from its westernmost point (the Mediterranean Sea) to its easternmost point (the Jordan River).

Israel at this time was comprised of three major regions: Galilee in the north, Judea in the south, with Samaria in between them.

Close-Ups of Various Parts of Israel

Northern Israel

Sea of Galilee and surrounding area – This large inland lake was situated in the region of Galilee – that is, northern Israel.

Central Israel

Samaria

Southern Israel

Judea

Jerusalem and surrounding area – Jerusalem, the largest city of Judea and Israel’s capital, was located in the central region of Judea (Israel’s southern region). This map includes the Mount of Olives, Bethany (where Lazarus and his two sisters lived), and a guess at a location for Bethphage.
