Audio Capsule on Jesus Christ as the Way

  • What we call Christianity was called “the Way” in New Testament times. Notice how Paul and Luke use the term – Acts 9:1-2; 19:9, 23; 24:14, 22 – especially Acts 24:14.
  • See also “this Way” in Acts 22:4 and “the way of God” in Acts 18:26
  • Preceding all this, Jesus called Himself “the Way” the night before He died – John 14:6
  • Preceding Jn 14:6, there was a Jewish conception of “the way of God” (Matt 22:16; Mark 12:14; Luke 20:21), which Jesus seemed to be appropriating in John 14:6.
  • With regard to all that is above, consider also how Jesus used the term “the way of righteousness” in Matt 21:32 and how Peter used it in 2 Pet 2:21.
  • The word “exodus” (Heb 11:22) is a compound of “ex” (meaning “out of”) and “odus” (meaning “way“), and thus Jesus is “the way out” of sin and of this world. This is why He so often says, “Follow Me” (almost two dozen times in the NT).
  • In Heb 10:20, Paul writes of “a new and living way.”
  • The “path of life” in Ps 16:11 is rendered the “WAYS OF LIFE” when it is quoted in Act 2:28.
  • God distinguishes His ways from ours in Is 55:8-9.
  • One’s ways can be good (Jer 6:16) or evil (Jer 18:11).
  • Forsaking the way invites punishment (Prov 15:10).
