Who and What Does God Love?

Who Does God Love?

According to the Bible (which is the same thing as saying “According to Jesus Christ”), God loves people. That includes you. Even me. It includes every human being. We were made in His image. Jesus died on a cross for all of us. How could He love us any more than that! We should always and everywhere reject the idea that any of us are unloved.

What Does God Love?

God loves righteousness. Doing what is right. What is good. God Himself is righteous, and He wants us – creatures made in His image – to be righteous as well. The problem is that we’re sinners and righteousness doesn’t come naturally to us. We have to study it and practice to become consistently good at it.

Conflicted?

If we are loved, but our evil conduct is not, how is God going to feel about us? He’s going to want us to repent -which is to change, to turn away from evil and toward what is right. That is most effectively achieved when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Teacher (John 13:13) – that is, when we become His disciples, His students, His pupils.

Repentance to Righteousness

Repentance is not a once-and-and done process. It’s a lifestyle – a lifelong process. The goal is to become like Jesus by living for Him instead of for self. Pursuing this goal requires daily humility. We need to look for the logs in our own eyes that we can remove, and not get distracted by, the specks in others’ eyes.

We must remember, too, that God will never stop loving us even as He never stops hating our sins. We just need to get to where we hate them as much as He does. Let’s hasten the day when He can love us as much for the way we live as He does for the simple fact that He created us.
