Chapter 1 – References to the Second Coming
References to the Second Coming in Isaiah (continued)
Because I wanted to show you how “day of the Lord” in Isaiah 13 fit with “day of salvation” in Isaiah 49, I skipped over the following passage from Isaiah 22. Let’s read it now. It’s a good example of how Old Testament passages work in conjunction with New Testament passages – ways that cannot be fully appreciated until you’ve re-read the Bible often enough to notice the connections.
Like many such prophecies, this one not only speaks to the events of its time, but also foreshadows later events – in this case, the Second Coming. The passage focuses on two men – Shebna and Eliakim – who served King Hezekiah’s court in the late 8th century BC. I’ve put a blank line between the first section which is about Shebna (who is analogous to Satan), and the second which is about the man who would take his place: Eliakim (who is analogous to Jesus). To help you see the connection between Eliakim and Jesus, I’ve not only put the key parts in bold, I’ve also put below it a quotation of it from Jesus in the book of Revelation to show how it fits the Second Coming.
Isaiah 22:15 Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts,
“Come, go to this steward,
To Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household,
Isaiah 22:16 ‘What right do you have here,
And whom do you have here,
That you have hewn a tomb for yourself here,
You who hew a tomb on the height,
You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?
Isaiah 22:17 ‘Behold, the LORD is about to hurl you headlong, O man.
And He is about to grasp you firmly
Isaiah 22:18 And roll you tightly like a ball,
To be cast into a vast country;
There you will die
And there your splendid chariots will be,
You shame of your master’s house.’
Isaiah 22:19 “I will depose you from your office,
And I will pull you down from your station.
Isaiah 22:20 “Then it will come about in that day,
That I will summon My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
Isaiah 22:21 And I will clothe him with your tunic
And tie your sash securely about him.
I will entrust him with your authority,
And he will become a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
Isaiah 22:22 “Then I will set the key of the house of David on his shoulder,
When he opens no one will shut,
When he shuts no one will open.
Isaiah 22:23 “I will drive him like a peg in a firm place,
And he will become a throne of glory to his father’s house.
Isaiah 22:24 “So they will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, offspring and issue, all the least of vessels, from bowls to all the jars.
Revelation 3:7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this:
Thus the futures that Isaiah prophesied for Shebna and Eliakim foreshadowed the very different futures of “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and “the Savior of the world” (1 John 4:14). Recall also the prophecy from Isaiah 9 which speaks of Jesus becoming “Mighty God” and “Eternal Father” and notice the parallels with Eliakim’s prophesied future.
Matthew16:27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels…
