The Implications of the Second Coming as Accomplished Fact

(Book Installment 10)

The Scope of the Second Coming

Chapter 1 – References to the Second Coming

References to the Second Coming in Isaiah (continued and concluded)

The last two verses we want to consider from Isaiah come at the end of his long book.

Isaiah 65:17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.

Isaiah 66:22 “For just as the new heavens and the new earth
Which I make will endure before Me,” declares the LORD,
“So your offspring and your name will endure.

Although these are the only two explicit prophecies of a new heavens and new earth that can be found in the Old Testament, there are less explicit prophecies about it, such as the following one from the Psalms.

Psalm 102:25 “Of old You founded the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
Psalm 102:26 “Even they will perish, but You endure;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed
.

Thus the Old Testament gets on the record what will show up in the New Testament – 2 Peter and Revelation, to be specific. Here’s the what we find in the latter:

Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

Of course, the new heavens and new earth in the Second Coming would be spiritual, not physical. But that doesn’t make them less important; on the contrary, it makes them an even bigger deal. Most important for our purposes, these prophecies serve to call attention to the cataclysmic importance of what happened that day.

We’ve spent more time sampling verses about the Second Coming from the book of Isaiah than we will from any other Old Testament book. Let’s review the Second Coming references we’ve found…with a view toward what they say about its scope.

  • Isaiah 2
    • “the last days”
    • “that day”
    • “a day of reckoning”
  • Isaiah 9
    • “the government will rest on His shoulders”
    • “Mighty God, Eternal Father”
    • “There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom”
    • “From then on and forevermore”
  • Isaiah 13
    • “the day of the Lord”
  • Isaiah 22
    • “that day”
    • “he will become a father”
    • “Then I will set the key of the house of David on his shoulder,
      When he opens no one will shut,
      When he shuts no one will open.”
    • “I will drive him like a peg in a firm place,”
    • “he will become a throne of glory to his father’s house”
    • “So they will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house”
  • Isaiah 49
    • “a day of salvation”
  • Isaiah 65 and 66
    • “new heavens and a new earth”

If you were to sum up the scope of the Second Coming based on these references alone, you would know that it was a great, great day of justice and deliverance, all centered on a great, great person. It’s the event that kicked Satan out of heaven and opened heaven’s door to all of us. But there’s still much more to see. Next up, Daniel.
