The Implications of the Second Coming as Accomplished Fact

(Book Installment 18)

The Scope of the Second Coming

Chapter 1 – References to the Second Coming

References to the Second Coming in the Gospel of Matthew (continued)

The Second Coming would also be “the end” of the world as Israel knew it. Recall the multiple references to “the end” that I showed you from Daniel 12. What Matthew is demonstrating throughout his Gospel is that Jesus is declaring that “the end” that Daniel had prophesied centuries before was now on the verge of happening.

Matthew 10:22 “You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

Matthew 13:39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels.
Matthew 13:40 “So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.

Matthew 13:41 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,
Matthew 13:42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:43 “Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Matthew 13:49 “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous,
Matthew 13:50 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 24:3 As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

Matthew 24:6 “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.

Matthew 24:13 “But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.
Matthew 24:14 “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Think of “the end” also as “the goal.” God had been working from a plan all along – from the very beginning. Even before creation itself, God planned the salvation of the world from the sin and death that would have otherwise doomed it to meaninglessness and despair. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ would be the completion of God’s project of redemption.
