The Implications of the Second Coming as Accomplished Fact

(Book Installment 23)

The Scope of the Second Coming

Chapter 1 – References to the Second Coming

References to the Second Coming in Paul’s Letters (continued)

Notice in the following string of verses that Paul continues the practice of the prophets, which is to vary the labels of the coming day. Of course, such variations are not different days, but rather different ways of describing the same day – thus expanding our minds to absorb the vastness of what was going to be accomplished in the Second Coming.

1 Corinthians 1:8 who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 5:5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;

Philippians 2:16 holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

1 Thessalonians 5:2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.
1 Thessalonians 5:4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
1 Thessalonians 5:5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness;
1 Thessalonians 5:6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

In terms of appreciating the wide scope of the Second Coming, let the following few – though I could have listed many, many more – examples remind you that it’s not just variations on the literal word “day” that the prophets and apostles have given us, it’s other entirely different expressions as well.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
