The Implications of the Second Coming as Accomplished Fact

(Book Installment 25)

The Scope of the Second Coming

Chapter 1 – References to the Second Coming

References to the Second Coming in the General Letters

In the New Testament, after the 14 letters of Paul, we find seven letters by four authors – usually called the “general” letters:

  • James (brother of the Lord)
  • 1 Peter (apostle)
  • 2 Peter
  • 1 John (apostle)
  • 2 John
  • 3 John
  • Jude (brother of the Lord)

These seven texts, like almost all the other 20 texts of the New Testament, reference the Second Coming. And, as with all the other texts, only a few examples of those references will be given here. In fact, the main thing I want to demonstrate by this list is how these four authors follow the same patterns as the rest of the biblical authors on this subject. That is, you’ll see the same variety of language used to describe “the great expectation,” and the same sense of urgency about it for that generation.

James 5:7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.
James 5:8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
1 Peter 1:7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1 Peter 4:7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

2 Peter 2:9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,

2 Peter 3:13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

1 John 2:18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.

1 John 2:28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.

1 John 4:17 By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world.

Jude 1:6 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,

So, you can see that these references to the Second Coming are, like all the others we’ve seen, words of guidance to the generation that would live through the passing of the old world and the dawn of the new.
